There are two ways to setup TLS/SSL. You can either use a self-signed certificate (free), or you can buy a certificate from one of the registrars such as Godaddy or Network Solutions.
Some web browsers and email readers pop up a message if you go to a site that has a self-signed certificate, otherwise, I’m not sure that it makes any difference. (seems to be more a problem with the browser or mail reader than anything else.)
